The Daniels and Fisher Tower
William Cooke Daniels and William G. Fisher where the original owners of the Daniels and Fisher store. The D&F Store was originally located in a different building but by summer of 1910 construction of a new Daniels and Fisher store was underway. The Tower opened in November 1911 and Daniels and Fisher Department Store opened in 1912 at 16th St. and Arapahoe. The D & F Tower was the tallest building in Denver at the time. Buffalo Bill remarked that the tower ruined the view of the mountains west of Denver. The Campanile of St. Mark's Plaza in Venice, was the inspiration for the style of the tower. The D&F store was open until May of 1958 when the business moved to a new location. The D&F store later merged with the May Company to become the May D&F store. After that, the building became the Tower Merchandise Mart. They closed the doors in 1965 and the building was mostly vacant until 1971 when the main part of the building was demolished, leaving only the tower standing.
It's sad that only the tower was saved but the D&F Tower has undergone extensive repair and restoration since those days and it has been declared an historic landmark. D&F Tower historic preservation foundation owner and founder, Mike Urbana worked on restoration for many years.
W.C. Daniels prearranged to have his ashes hidden inside one of the walls after his death and in 1980 during restoration work, a container holding his ashes was found inside a wall.
The D & F Tower is one of downtown Denver's most well known landmarks.
